What is the main responsibility of electrocardiogram and stress ecg?

Updated: Jul 19, 2021

The so-called "heart disease" is just a vague and general term. The chief physician of the Taipei Veterans General Hospital of the University of California, Berkeley, emphasized that different types of heart diseases can be diagnosed through different tests.

Wu Zaozhong, an attending physician at the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, National Taiwan University Hospital, explained that under normal circumstances, doctors will make a diagnosis step by step in the simplest, least invasive, economical, and safest way.

What I want to point out here is that in clinical practice, the most common cardiovascular examination used by physicians: physical examination

When it comes to practicing cardiologists, in addition to consulting the doctor's symptoms, medical history, and family history, the doctor will first draw blood from the patient's left and right hands, and then perform examinations, measurements, and physical examinations.

The purpose of auscultation is to check whether the heartbeat is normal and whether there are noises. In addition, the stethoscope can hear murmurs in the lungs, neck, and abdomen to determine whether the patient has heart failure, arrhythmia, valvular heart disease, aortic disease, or vascular stenosis.

Sometimes the doctor will tap or touch the upper body of the patient to determine if there is an enlarged heart.

The following first introduces the ECG and exercise, there is nothing that the ECG can detect

  Electrocardiogram

Most patients who come to the cardiology department have an electrocardiogram. The electrocardiogram is like measuring the "current emitted by the heart", because the heartbeat and rhythm of the heart will form electrical potential conduction. The electrocardiogram is to collect the ECG waveform and draw the pulse waveform to determine whether there is myocardial hypoxia, arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, conduction disorder, etc.

  stress ecg

After the electrocardiogram is completed, when the doctor suspects angina or ischemic heart disease, the patient will be advised to do stress ecg, that is, the patient will record the changes in the electrocardiogram while running.

Because, myocardial tissue hypoxia can represent the lack of blood supply to the heart, but some people have little effect on the degree of vascular stenosis. The electrocardiogram in the resting state does not show that their myocardial cells are hypoxic. It can only be seen when stress is applied to the heart, such as increasing oxygen consumption through running time.

Heart attack and stress ecg are usually completed within 10 minutes.

When doing stress ecg, if you feel unbearable, you must immediately notify the doctor or technician around you and stop the examination immediately. In rare cases, stress ecg can cause severe arrhythmia.
